The Roads Authority believes the construction of the M1 stretch from Kamuzu International Airport Junction in Lilongwe to Chiweta in Rumphi District will be completed on time.
Public Relations Officer at the Authority, Portia Kajanga, said this after touring the M1 Lot 1 from KIA to Mtiti in Dowa District and the Crossroads-Kanengo 10-kilometre dual carriageway.
Kajanga noted that it is encouraging to see some sections nearing completion by the end of this year, while others will be completed next year. She added that once completed, the road will boost economic activities.
The M1 stretch under construction has been assigned to three separate contractors, and the Crossroads-Kanengo 10-kilometre dual carriageway, which is under the Chinese company Shandong Liquao, is at 90 percent completion.
“The road project, which is being undertaken using a grant from the Chinese government, is of good quality, meaning that it will serve the intended purpose of faceliftng the capital city Lilongwe,” Kajanga said.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is implementing various development projects, including road infrastructure development, as a way of improving Lilongwe to match its status as the capital city of Malawi.
