Dalitso Kabambe has secured the UTM presidency with a landslide victory, obtaining 636 votes against Newton Kambala’s 26 votes, Mathews Mtumbuka’s 22 votes and former secretary general Patricia Kaliati’s 21 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Kabambe thanked Kaliati and the central executive team for maintaining party cohesion after the death of founding leader, Dr. Saulos Chilima.
The elections have also introduced new figures to UTM’s key positions. Willet Kalonga is the new Secretary General, with Alexander Bulirani serving as Vice President. Penjani Kaluwa is the Director of Youth and Chim Banda has been chosen as Organizing Secretary.
Felix Njawala is the Publicity Secretary while Maquenda Chunga becomes the Director of Campaigns. Cecilia Mandambwe has been elected Director of Women, Emily Phiri takes the role of Political Affairs Director, Alisa Sande becomes Director of Protocol, and Bright Kawaga is the new Director of Elections.
