‘Inmates have rights too’

High Court Judge for Lilongwe District Registry, Mzondi Mvula, has stressed that every human being has a right to exercise his or her own rights despite being a prisoner.

Mvula said this at Maula Prison in Lilongwe during the commemorations of the World Human Rights Day which is under the theme “Our Rights Our Future, Right Now”.

Mvula further said the High Court has the power of review and confirmation and re-look the decisions of the lower court so that they can do something about prisoners cases.

National Paralegal Coordinator, Chimwemwe Ndalahoma, said it is important that human rights are also observed in prison as it the duty of every human being to enjoy these rights.

The day was designated as International Human Rights with the aim of raising awareness of the fundamentals rights that belong to every human as a birth right.

Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations Assembly on December 10,1948.
