The Higher Education Student Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB), through its maiden Grants Scheme, has awarded grants to 26 students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) for achieving distinction grades in the 2023/2024 academic year.
The students will benefit from grants covering their tuition fees and living expenses for their second year of study.
The Executive Director of HESLGB, Prince Phwetekere, told MBCDigital that the Grants Scheme targets all first-year students from accredited higher education institutions who have demonstrated exceptional performance in fields such as mining, engineering, agriculture, health, and education.
Phwetekere added that students are awarded based on their first-year distinction grades and can continue to receive grants in subsequent years if they maintain their distinction grades.
He further mentioned that in the 2023/2024 academic year, the board received 99 nominations from MUBAS and Mzuzu University, but only 26 students, all from MUBAS, were awarded.
