Government hails Ufulu Wanga Project for protecting people with albinism

Government has applauded the Ufulu Wanga Project for its significant role in protecting the rights and improving healthcare services for people with albinism across eight districts.

Secretary for Health, Dr Samson Mndolo, made the remarks in Lilongwe during the dissemination of results for the Ufulu Wanga Project, which has come to an end.

Dr Mndolo pointed out that in the past years, people with albinism were relying on referral hospitals to get their medical care, but now the status quo has changed within the two years since such services are now being offered in all districts owing to the Ufulu Wanga Project.

Bonface Massah, a representative of the three implementing organizations—Standing Voice Malawi, YONECO, and Beyond Sun Care—revealed that the initiative has contributed to an 80% reduction in threats faced by people with albinism.

The two-year project, among others, has reached out to over 3000 people with albinism, conducted over 270 surgeries for people who had tumors, constructed security houses for people with albinism and trained local surgeons on how to conduct dermatology, among other successes.
