Plans by the government to immediately start the rehabilitation of the Karonga-Chiweta road is attracting praise by major stakeholders, including the Road Transport Operators Association (RTOA).
Deputy Minister of Transport, Steve Malondera, revealed this during an interaction with traditional leaders and business operators in Karonga District.
According to Malondera, the Treasury has already released more than K5 billion to the Road Fund Administration for the project, which is scheduled to start within 14 days.
RTOA President Bisani Banda said the rehabilitation of the Chiweta stretch will reduce the time spent on the road when travelling between Malawi and Tanzania.
Banda further disclosed that the rehabilitation will also cut expenses incurred by operators due to the current bad condition of the road which has resulted in frequent breakdowns of their trucks.
The rehabilitation of the Chiweta road is one of the major multi-billion Kwacha infrastructure projects by the Chakwera-led Administration, which are aimed at transforming the road network across the country.
