Director of Youth in the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Richard Chimwendo Banda has warned that government will not tolerate favouritism and corruption in the implementation of programmes intended to cushion rural masses from hunger and economic problems.
Addressing people at Dwangwa Trading Centre in Nkhotakota, Chimwendo Banda, who is also Minister of Local Government, said some district council officers and members of village development structures are deliberately frustrating the programmes through favouritism.
The programmes include social cash transfers, public works and relief food.
Chimwendo Banda ordered Council Chairperson for Nkhotakota to investigate the whereabouts of maize which people were supposed to receive.
“We have reports that some village development committees and local councils are involved in acts of favouritism when implementing government programmes such as relief food. We can’t tolerate that because these interventions are meant to cushion Malawians,” said Chimwendo Banda.
On development, he assured the people of Nkhotakota and Salima that construction of the long-neglected M5 Road is on course.
On the status of the economy, the Local Government Minister said the administration is fixing the economy as evidenced by the stabilisation of both food and non-food inflation in recent months.
On sports, the MCP Director of Youth disclosed the government’s plan to construct a stadium at Dwangwa.
“Not only are we constructing the stadium here, but we want the youth to have access to soft loans at NEEF,” said Chimwendo Banda.
He also assured officers at Nkhunga Police Station at Dwangwa that the government will soon construct 40 houses for officers at the station.
