Chakwera urges hard work over handouts

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has urged Malawians to work hard in various sectors of the economy, including agriculture, instead of depending on handouts.

The President made the remarks at Nlhwazi Trading Centre in Mchinji District, where he held a development rally.

Dr Chakwera encouraged farmers to form or join existing cooperatives and use mechanisation where possible to increase production, and he warned that any country whose people depend on handouts can’t develop.

The Malawi leader also assured people in Mchinji that government will continue electrifying various centres through MAREP.

On the welfare of traditional leaders, Dr. Chakwera noted that for years, many chiefs were not receiving honoraria, but his government has prioritised their welfare in recognition of their critical role in grassroots development. He further pledged to expand the number of chiefs on the honoraria payroll.

Addressing the need for national unity, Dr. Chakwera urged Malawians to maintain peace among themselves and with neighbouring countries. He also assured residents of Mchinji South that plans are underway to upgrade Waliranji Community Day Secondary School into a full conventional secondary school.

Earlier, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda said President Chakwera stands out among all Presidential aspirants, citing projects such as the long-delayed rehabilitation of the M5 Road as proof of his commitment to delivering results where past administrations failed.
