Chakwera hails IFAD for relentless support

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has commended the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for its unwavering support in improving the livelihoods of Malawians through various development initiatives.

President Chakwera made the remarks in Lilongwe during an audience with the Regional Director for IFAD Responsible for Southern and Easten Africa, Sarah Mbago-Bhunu.

Addressing the IFAD delegation led by Mbago-Bhunu, Dr Chakwera expressed appreciation for the role IFAD has played over the years, pumping substantial financial resources in various poverty alleviation interventions, including the provision of seed capital to ultra-poor households, food security and financial literacy.

Dr Chakwera said that through such interventions, many households’ living conditions have improved through food security, among other things.

Mbago-Bhunu assured the Malawi leader that IFAD will continue working with the government and people of Malawi in various portfolios aimed at alleviating poverty.

She cited the Trade programme, through which IFAD is sponsoring roads and bridges to ease transportation of produce.

IFAD has, over the years, supported Malawi in various projects worth billions of Kwacha.
