President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has attended the Extraordinary Summit of the Organ Troika and SADC Troika at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Zambia.
During the opening ceremony, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, who chaired the summit as the SADC Organ Chairperson, emphasized that wars and conflicts hinder nation-building, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts to address insecurities in targeted countries.
He urged African leaders to lead in resource mobilisation efforts for ongoing development initiatives.
The summit was convened as part of the SADC’s mission to promote sustainable and equitable economic growth, social-economic development, effective productive systems, strong cooperation, and good governance among African states.
SADC nations initiated troop deployments in collaboration with UN forces to enhance stability in regions facing threats.
President Hichilema highlighted the significance of the double Troika in restoring peace for sustainable development, stressing the need for troop contributions to the SADC Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) and the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM).
SADC, established in 1980 initially as the Southern African Development Coordinating Conference (SADCC) and then SADC in August 1992, comprises 16 member states.
President Chakwera chaired SADC in 2021 before handing over the chairmanship to Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
