President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is this morning attending centenary celebrations of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at Hannock Msokera Primary School Ground in Kasungu.
The clergy at the church say it was founded in 1816 by Bishop Richard Allen at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the United States of America, and was brought into the country by Reverend Hannock Msokera in 1924.
The church is also lauded for contributing to the country’s health and education sectors, operating 26 primary schools and two secondary schools in Malawi.
The church through Reverend Msokera also contributed to the education of Malawi’s first President Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Records indicate that through its Women Missionary Society, the church enrolled Dr Banda at Wilberforce Academy in America and continued to support him while at Meharry Medical College where he obtained his doctorate degree.
