MANAD launch Sign Language Dictionary App, Website

Malawi National Association for the Deaf (MANAD) has launched its first-ever Sign Language Dictionary App and Website in Lilongwe.

Chairman of MANAD, Robert Mbendera, said the dictionary and website will help address challenges faced by the deaf community.

Mbendera also commended Malawi Broadcasting Corporation for including sign language interpreters in their programmes and urged other media houses to follow suit.

“We have been facing a lot of challenges in accessing our needs in different sectors such as health, legal, and human rights because we did not have an effective way of communicating,” Mbendera said.

Chief Disability Welfare Officer in the Ministry of Gender, Joshua Mkwehima, acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by the deaf community.

Mkwehima said that the sign language dictionary app and the website would bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing communities.
