Blantyre Water Board BWB says it will increase the connection of its customers from the current 90,000 to 120,000 in the next five years.
This will be achieved through the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project MWSP 1 which is aimed at increasing access to improved water and sanitation services in Blantyre city.
Speaking during a press briefing in Blantyre, Chief Executive Officer for BWB Robert Hanjahanja said the project will also help to reduce non-revenue water through the rehabilitation of treatment plants, distribution and connection networks.
“Through the project, about 1.4 million residents of Blantyre city and surrounding areas will benefit from improved water and sanitation services,” said Hanjahanja.
Blantyre Water Board is implementing the project in collaboration with the Blantyre City Council (BCC).
Director of Engineering Services at BCC, Chimwemwe Mndelemani, said through the project, the council will rehabilitate the sewerage network, and treatment plants and improve solid waste management by constructing a new solid waste recycling plant in Chigumula Blantyre.
