British Govt reaffirms support for meteorological services

The British Government has pledged to continue providing Malawi with modern equipment to enhance its weather forecasting capabilities amid increasing climate shocks affecting the country.

Fiona Ritchie, British High Commissioner to Malawi, made the remarks during a visit to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services offices in Blantyre.

Ritchie commended the department for its accuracy in weather forecasting, noting that it helps save lives and protect property.

She highlighted last year’s forecast of Cyclone Freddy, stating that without the prediction, the impact could have been even more disastrous.

The Director of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, Lucy Mtilatila, appreciated Ritchie’s visit, expressing hope for further collaboration with the British Government in weather prediction.

“Our work is to share weather warning information so that people can make informed decisions. We will continue doing our best to ensure the information is accurate,” Mtilatila said.

For over 20 years, the British Government has supported Malawi’s Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services by providing new studio equipment and upgrades.
