Bengolnet, a local telecommunications company, has urged Malawians to appreciate the ongoing digital transformation in the country by ensuring the care and maintenance of the fiber infrastructure connecting all districts.
Project Manager for Bengolnet Malawi, Dixon Daelo, made the call during the visit of Baldwin Chiyamwaka, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, to the National Library Services premises in Blantyre.
The visit was aimed at evaluating how the library users are benefiting from the free WiFi internet connection.
“Finding young people studying whilst using free internet means dligitalisation is already transforming lives. The Digital Malawi Project is a success,” remarked Chiyamwaka.
Last year, Malawi achieved a global milestone by becoming the first country to offer free Internet access to public institutions under the Digital Malawi Project, which aims to expand and enhance access to essential ICT infrastructure for both public and private sectors.
Currently, there are three Service Set Identifiers (SSIDs) for WiFi connections: Malawian Free WiFi, Nzika, and Boma.
Nzika is accessible to the public for government services, while Boma is reserved for National Library staff.
