ECAMA Annual Conference closes with renewed resolve, new leadership

The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA) 2026 Annual Conference has concluded with a renewed sense of resolve and purpose.

In her closing remarks, ECAMA’s Executive Director, Esmie Kanyumbu, acknowledged Malawi’s persistent challenges in reform implementation, citing weak institutional coordination, inadequate monitoring systems and limited resources.

She stressed that success lies not in producing more policies, but in sequencing and executing reforms that deliver tangible impact on stability, growth, job creation and structural transformation.

Looking ahead, ECAMA will issue a formal communiqué outlining key resolutions, deepen stakeholder engagement and monitor progress.

Kanyumbu also honoured ECAMA’s longstanding corporate partners: NICO Group, Old Mutual Malawi, FDH Bank, Japan Tobacco International (JTI), Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), and Press Corporation whose consistent support has sustained ECAMA’s work over the years.

Their enduring partnership, she noted, reflects the key role of the private sector in advancing economic dialogue and reform.

The conference further marked the election of the 2026–2029 Executive Committee, overseen by Justice Zione Ntaba. With electronic voting conducted members delivered a clear mandate to:

– President: Bertha Bangara Chikadza (unopposed)
– Vice President: Arthur Madalitso Ngwende
– Secretary General: Gilbert Kachamba
– Treasurer General: Hope Mfuni
– Deputy Treasurer General: Ngaimanye Raisa Mkondiwa
– Executive Members: Evangelist Marvin Banda, Goodluck Chaphulika, Karen Partridge and Lucy Penama.

ECAMA concluded its 2026 Annual Conference by affirming that, with renewed resolve, strengthened partnerships and a clear mandate for its new leadership, the journey towards meaningful economic reform has only just begun.
