The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi’s (ESCOM) Optic Fibre Communications (OFC), an autonomous division under ESCOM, has injected K10 million into the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) ICT Innovation Awards to boost digital innovation and support local solutions.
Director of Broadcasting at MACRA, Zadziko Mankhambo, said the initiative, a first of its kind, seeks to provide a platform for innovators to showcase solutions to national challenges.
“We just want to assist in accelerating development through provision of solutions to various challenges that we have,” he said.
The two-day event, scheduled for 21–22 April, will feature innovators from across the country, with two winners set to participate in an international forum.
Mankhambo emphasised that ICT remains central to national progress, noting that meaningful development depends on automation and digital transformation.
OFC Chief Marketing and Sales Officer Stella Hara said Optic Fibre Communications (OFC) supported the awards to boost Malawi’s digital growth by empowering local innovators.
The funding and connectivity enable seamless showcasing of ideas, foster partnerships, and provide access to reliable infrastructure, promoting sustainable, home-grown solutions.
“We are supporting these awards to ensure local innovators have the connectivity and infrastructure they need to grow their ideas into real solutions that benefit Malawians,” said Hara.
She added that OFC will develop affordable connectivity packages and provide access to its Tier 3 data centre, enabling innovators to scale their ideas locally while reducing reliance on foreign services.
