WORLEC calls for equality, inclusivity for women in politics

Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WOLREC) has stressed the need to uphold principles of equality and inclusivity in the political arena.

Maggie Banda, WOLREC’s Executive Director, says violence against women in politics violates human rights and undermines democratic principles.

Her comments come as the road to 2025 general elections continue to shape up.

Banda adds that sexist insults and intimidation against female candidates deter women from fully engaging in politics, leading to their underrepresentation in decision-making roles and public positions.

She points out the need to reinforce stiff penalties as stipulated in the Political Act (2018) and the guiding electoral laws.
