The National Planning Commission (NPC) says President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) instills hope among citizens when it comes to realisation of Malawi’s 2063 blueprint.
NPC Director General Dr Thomas Munthali, described the SONA as ‘MW-2063 centric’, singling out its focus on wealth creation.
“It places wealth creation at the centre in language and priorities of focus. It sends the correct signals to all stakeholders – Parliament, MDAs, non-state actors, and citizens on the importance of getting serious in living the talk of wealth creation,” Munthali said.
During his address to the August House, President Chakwera highlighted his administration’s emphasis on leveraging agriculture, tourism, and mining to boost the economy, asserting that these efforts are already yielding positive results.
Chakwera expressed his commitment to providing hope to Malawians through policies aimed at rescuing the climate-change-ravaged economy and rebuilding lost livelihoods.
“I for one am in the business of giving Malawians hope. It is a hope based on the policies we have deployed to rescue our climate-change-ravaged economy from total collapse. It is a hope based on the belief that the Malawian people have the energy and resilience to work hard in rebuilding their lost livelihoods,” he said.
Munthali has since pledged support towards Chakwera’s development ambitions, emphasizing the need for accountability in operationalizing the SONA, especially during the upcoming national budget session.
In the SONA, President Chakwera outlined plans by the government for reforms in debt management and tax, indicating a shift towards grants and concessional loans.
