Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) has urged communities to participate in environmental conservation to mitigate the effects of climate change.
WESM’s Nkhotakota District Branch Manager, Rashid Malandula, made the remarks during a tree planting exercise of giant bamboo species in three traditional authorities of Mzengera, Mphonde, and Kanyenda in Nkhotakota District.
Malandula called for collective efforts in mitigating wanton tree cutting and stressed that natural disasters occur frequently because some communities do not conserve the environment.
He said about 1500 bamboos have been planted this year and 1400 are adapting well.
The Giant Bamboo Planting Project is a 3-year pilot initiative by WESM, funded by the UK’s Cooperative Climate Action Limited and it commenced in April 2023.
