Opposition parties afraid of elections – Umodzi Party

Umodzi Party president, Thomas Kaumba, has said the recent calls by some opposition political parties for the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson shows that they are not ready and are afraid of the September 2025 elections.

At a recent joint press briefing, the DPP, AFORD, and UTM made the resignation call, citing the introduction of the new election management devices by the electoral institution, among other reasons.

Kaumba has told MBC Digital that it surprising that the said parties have no confidence in MEC and yet the commission is made up of commissioners that represent the very same parties.

“MEC Chairperson Justice Mtalimanja joined the commission recently but the commission has some commissioners who have stayed longer than her. In this case, most of the decisions were made before the current MEC Chairperson,” said Kaumba.

Malawi will hold general elections in September next year.
