Man faces murder charges after businessman’s death

Police in Kawale have upgraded charges against a remanded suspect, Thomas Gwero Phiri, 32, from acts intended to cause grievous harm to murder following the death of a businessman, Lameck Kunyengana.

According to Kawale Police Public Relations Officer, Mabvuto Phiri, the suspect had been staying with the deceased.

“On December 8, 2024, Kunyengana assigned Phiri to supervise his shop in Area 24 for the entire day,” said Phiri.

“It is alleged that the two disagreed on payment, Kunyengana offered Phiri K10,000 but he demanded a higher amount, leading to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation and in the process, the suspect stabbed his friend in the stomach with an unspecified object,” he added.

On January 6, 2025, Kunyengana died from his injuries while still undergoing treatment at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, a development that made the police to amend the charges against Phiri from acts intended to cause grievous harm to murder.
