National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) is expected to expand its storage facilities and improve maintenance following the Egyptian government’s commitment to support the initiative.
Egyptian ambassador to Malawi, Rasha Hamdy, made the commitment in Lilongwe following a visit to the NFRA complex.
The visit comes at a time when eight silos at the NFRA are in bad shape and require renovation.
According to Hamdy, the visit is part of strengthening the relationship that exists between Malawi and Egypt.
“We are keen to support Malawi in strengthening food security, particularly in grain storage and staff capacity building, through the transfer of knowledge and technology to NFRA personnel, said Hamdy.
Board Chairperson for NFRA, Bruce Munthali, said the visit will allow the agency to explore other avenues of collaboration, including improved methods of storing rice, millet, and other crops.
Munthali said some of the silos were originally constructed by Egyptian experts, hence looking forward to how Egypt can assist Malawi in strengthening and improving such facilities.
Some of the silos were built in 1982.
