Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation Charles Chilambula has commended the Global Fund for supporting the government in strengthening health systems to improve health service delivery in the country.
Chilambula made the remarks during the commissioning of the newly constructed laboratory at Mpherembe Community Hospital in Mzimba, funded by the Global Fund.
He noted that the construction of the laboratory will help the facility’s response to emerging infectious diseases, expand access to high-quality laboratory services and improve patient outcomes.
Inkosi Mpherembe of Mzimba said the facility will ease mobility challenges for people of Mpherembe and surrounding communities who were traveling to Mzuzu Central Hospital to get diagnosed, since the facility has no laboratory.
Director of Health and Sanitation Services at the Mzimba North District Health Office, Dr Wamaka Musopole, highlighted the need for additional services such as a theater, admission ward and laundry for the facility to fully function as a community hospital.
The laboratory has been constructed to the tune of K116 million.
It is one of the 27 laboratories the government has constructed across the country with funding from the Global Fund.
