President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated his government’s commitment towards ensuring provision of clean and potable water, particularly in the rural areas.
Dr. Chakwera was speaking at Thazima in Rumphi District when he officially commissioned the Nyika-Vwaza Gravity-Fed Water Scheme ,worth over €4 million, courtesy of the government of Germany
through its development arm, KfW.
President Chakwera further said the development is in line with the ATM&M strategy which, among others, underscores the need for the promotion of tourism in the country.
German Ambassador to Malawi, Ute Konnig, promised her government’s continued support towards Malawi Government in its efforts of promoting tourism and community transformation.
Themba la Mathemba Chikulamayembe of the district described the development as a direct result of the good leadership by Dr. Chakwera, aimed at improving the livelihoods of communities in the country.
Nyika-Vwaza Gravity Fed Water Scheme Board Chairperson, Justice Edward Tweya SC Retired, described the development as key in making sure that communities have access to safe and potable water.
It is estimated that the water project will benefit 30,000 people by the year 2030 from the current 18,000 people.
