CSOs criticise opposition attempted demos

Local Civil Society Organisations have criticised the recent demonstrations organised by opposition parties demanding the resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials, calling them unwarranted.

Nyika Institute Executive Director, Moses Mkandawire, responded to recent actions by some opposition parties, saying, “There is no justification; the matter has not reached the deadline that the opposition can organise any demonstrations.”

Meanwhile, Phunzirani Development Organisation’s Programs Manager, Kinear Mlowoka, stressed that while demonstrations and freedom of assembly are constitutional rights, he advised opposition parties to explore alternative ways to address their grievances.

This development follows a recent court ruling where the National Registration Bureau was ordered to register all prospective voters without National Identity Cards at MEC’s voter registration centres.
