Umunthu Plus, a local non-governmental organisation, with support from the Women’s Humanitarian Peace Fund (WHPF) through UN Women Malawi, has empowered women in Nkhotakota District to advocate for their rights and actively participate in national development.
The Women Voice Project (WVP) has established a district women’s forum, trained community and faith leaders, as well as media practitioners, to prioritise women’s voices in decision-making processes.
The organisation’s Programmes Manager, Promise Msampha, hailed the project for fostering a safe and inclusive environment for women to address critical challenges in their communities.
District Gender Officer, Scholar Ngwira and District Women Forum Chairperson, Vera Chioko, applauded the initiative, for its role in equipping women with tools to break cultural barriers and tackle Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
According to Msampha, despite the persisting challenges posed by cultural norms and GBV, the project is empowering women to take on leadership roles and contribute to the district’s development agenda.
