Two jailed for stealing maize

Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced two men, Misheck Sinagogo (26) and Mphatso Justin (21), to 48 months in prison with hard labour for Burglary and Theft.

Thyolo Police publicist Rebecca Kashoti said court proceedings led by state prosecutor Stella Mwimaniwa established that the duo broke into Lloyd Kalulu’s house on 3 April and stole three bags of maize valued at K150,000.

An investigation led to a maize buyer who revealed purchasing the stolen maize from one of the convicts, subsequently identifying his accomplice.

In court, Sinagogo and Justin pleaded guilty to the charges.

However, in mitigation, they requested leniency citing family obligations.

But state prosecutor Mwimaniwa advocated for a stiffer sentence, considering the severity of the offense, and Magistrate James Balakasi concurred, delivering 48 months imprisonment for the first count and 12 months for the second count, both to run concurrently.

Both convicts hail from Chilembwe village under Traditional Authority Nchilamwela in the district.
