The Magistrate Court in Blantyre has adjourned the case of six individuals, including Nadim Omar, a Malawian-Canadian national accused of possessing rhino horns and ivory, to September 19, 2024
In court, Detective Sergeant Bornface William testified that he arrested the first two suspects, Steven Kandoje and Chrissy Dailesi in Mpemba while they were trying to sell two rhino horns for MK600,000. They led the police to the other suspects including Hellen Maunjiri, Eliza Mpira and Ronnex Lopanda.
According to William, Eliza and Ronnex, who worked as a maid and houseboy at Omar’s house, found the rhino horns and planned to sell them. They handed the horns over to Hellen, who gave them to Chrissy Dailesi and Steve Kandoje to find a buyer.
During the investigation, police searched Omar’s house and found two pieces of worked ivory, leading to his caution for a second charge of possessing a listed species.
All suspects were arrested between July 28-29, 2024 and the state plans to call five more witnesses, including a DNA expert from South Africa.
