Reorganisation of Ministry of Education vital in promoting higher education – Kondowe

Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC) has commended the government’s decision to split the Ministry of Education into two entities, calling it a potential game-changer for Malawi’s higher education sector.

Kondowe told MBCDigital that the new Ministry of Higher Education leadership should prioritise creating a robust regulatory framework by aligning tertiary education with market demands and ensuring equitable access by all Malawians.

He further expressed that the reorganisation of the two ministries could still position higher education as a driver of Malawi’s socio-economic transformation in line with the Malawi 2063 Agenda.

Kondowe’s sentiments come amidst some reservations by some members of academia, who argue that the move risks duplicating structures without enhancing efficiency in higher education.

The reorganisation is part of President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s recent cabinet reshuffle. The newly established Ministry of Higher Education will be led by Jessie Kabwira, a former University of Malawi lecturer while the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education will be under the leadership of Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima.
