PAC urges unity in fight against smuggling

In a recent tour of uncharted routes used by smugglers in Lilongwe and Dedza districts, Mark Botomani, Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, called for national unity to combat smuggling, a vice he says is hindering the country’s development.

“We needed to come and see this for ourselves as a committee because most of the issues we deal with in Parliament and in our meetings with the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) we rely on second-hand information. With this tour, we have seen firsthand how serious and detrimental the problem is,” said Botomani.

Reflecting on the opposition to the introduction of tax stamps, Botomani attributed it to a lack of understanding.

“There are some quarters protesting the decision to introduce tax stamps. I think it is just a question of misunderstanding the whole issue. From the MRA’s perspective, the tax stamps are crucial as they will reduce smuggling. What is needed is better sensitisation, especially for those opposing the tax stamps,” he stressed.

He urged the MRA to enhance its efforts in educating the public about the benefits of tax stamps.

“The MRA needs to ensure that people are fully informed about what tax stamps entail. Taking them on tours like this one could help them understand the magnitude of the problem. My committee strongly supports the MRA in this initiative because it will help reduce smuggling,” Botomani emphasised.

Addressing concerns about over-taxation, Botomani acknowledged the burden but highlighted the necessity of taxes for national development.

“We can’t avoid taxes. At the end of the day, we pay taxes, and this revenue is crucial for the country’s development. It funds road infrastructure, healthcare, and other essential services. Yes, we may feel overtaxed, but these measures are vital for the nation’s progress,” he concluded.
