Norwegian govt committed to ensuring Malawians register for votes

Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Ingrid Marie Mikelsen, says her government is committed to ensuring that more Malawians register and access National Identity cards so that they can vote in next year’s General Elections.

Mikelsen has said this while inspecting the National Registration Bureau (NRB) offices at Karonga District Council.

“Since 2016, Norway has pumped in more than K5 billion supporting the NRB with National Registration and Identifcation System and we are proud to see a well functioning registration system in Malawi,”Mikelsen points out.

Principal Secretary for NRB in the Ministry of Homeland Security, Mphatso Sambo, says they are currently in the 8th phase of the National Identity Card outreach.

“NRB will register all eligible candidates who want to get a national ID. We don’t register people for elections. We only support the electoral process through the registration of Malawians for them to access the national ID,” Sambo stresses.

He further explains that NRB will soon launch a  mop up exercise in all districts from June 1, whereby all people who were left out in phase 8 will be accommodated so that they can get their national IDs.
