National competition authorities hailed for protecting consumer rights

COMESA Competition Commission (CCC) has emphasised the need to capacitate the National Competition Commission Authorities to enable them to continue their mandate of protecting consumer rights.

Chief Executive Officer for the CCC, Willard Mwemba, said this during the organisation’s 2nd Press Conference at the end of the 8th Regional COMESA Competition Commission annual sensitisation workshop for business reporters in Livingstone, Zambia.

Mwemba also hailed the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) in Malawi for being a shining star in demonstrating the effect of technical assistance from the commission.

He said the organisation has been working on various initiatives, including reviewing regional competition policies and investigating anti-competitive conduct.

Mwemba also announced some of the decisions made in the year 2023 to date for the benefit of the consumer on the common market as well as promoting fair competition.

He said the organization has made a lot of strides in restricting some mergers and acquisitions for the benefit of the member States.

Mwemba then emphasized the need of making sure that National Competition authorities are fully capacitated so that they continue to effectively enforce the national Competition and consumer protection regulations to safeguard the rights of the consumers.

The press conference was held at the 8th Regional COMESA Competition Commission annual sensitization workshop for business reporters where some COMESA business reporters were awarded after excelling in the COMESA Competition Commission writing competition called Dr George Lipimile Award of Excellence.
