Msakakuona is Blue Eagles caretaker coach

Blue Eagles have announced that Technical Director Deklerk Msakakuona has taken over as a caretaker coach following the departure of head coach Elijah Kananji.

Kananji, who has just been unveiled by Creck Sporting Club as their coach, resigned on Thursday but his last match shall be  against Ekhaya this afternoon at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe.

A communiqie from Blue Eagles signed by the Chairperson for the Malawi Police Service Sports Board, Babra Mchenga Tsiga, described Kananji’s tenure as a success.

“The club extends its deepest gratitude to Mr Kananji for his invaluable service and dedication since joining the team in 2021,” read part of the statement.

This means Msakakuona returns as coach after leaving the team in 2019 as he took the role as Malawi National Team Coach for the Under-17’s, and he shall be assisted by his son, Steve.

After he left, the club appointed former Flames coach, Gerald Phiri Senior but was sacked two seasons later and appointed Kananji, who led the team to second position in the top flight league and got relegated the next season.

In the 2023/24 season, Eagles, who were in the Chipiku Premier Division, finished their season unbeaten to earn promotion back to the elite league.

In the 2024 Season, the team won the FDH Bank Cup after defeating FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
