Mozambique-Malawi project operational by 2025 — ESCOM

Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) has announced that the nation will start accessing electricity from Mozambique through the Mozambique-Malawi (MOMA) power interconnection project by June next year.

Chief Operations Officer for ESCOM, Maxwell Mulimakwenda, made the remarks in Mwanza during a media tour organised to appreciate progress of the project.

Mulimakwenda said the project missed the deadline due to cyclone Freddy and other geographical challenges among others.

He said Malawi is expected to complete its 76 kilometre line from Mwanza border to Phombeya sub station in Balaka by December this year as 152 out of 190 towers have been erected.

“The further extension of June comes in because Mozambique will complete its 142 kilometre line by March next year,” Mulimakwenda said.

Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, said the 50 megawatts of electricity will improve Malawi’s industrialisation as well as wooing investors.

ESCOM is implementing the joint $127 million project with funding from the Malawi Government, World Bank, European Union and kFW.
