MHC BILLS COMPREHENSIVE HOUSING PROJECT AS GAME CHANGER

The Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) hopes to realise not less than K100 million this year from its Comprehensive Housing Solutions Project.

The project encompasses construction, welding, carpentry, landscaping, and maintenance among other services that MHC will provide to customers at different rates.

Briefing the media this week after a tour of the corporation’s carpentry, welding, and block-making workshops, MHC Board Chairperson Reverend Jareck Kachipanda said the corporation has made a lot of strides since becoming a commercial entity in 2016 after a nod from Parliament.

MHC Chief Executive Officer Dr Jordan Chipatala said the institution has built enough capacity to sell plots and construct and maintain houses.

Through Comprehensive Housing Solutions, MHC will also sell concrete blocks that it is producing at its Ngumbe site.

As of April 2023, MHC had 6,000 housing units, with many of them poorly maintained as they were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s and have been in use since then.

At that time, Chipatala had indicated that there were over 100,000 people on the waiting list seeking to rent houses and 20,000 that wanted to buy houses from the institution.

Malawi Housing Corporation is a statutory institution formed under a 1964 Act of Parliament.
