The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Chifundo Kachale, has asked the National Registration Bureau (NRB) to speed up the issuance of identity cards to those that already applied for the document.
Kachale made the call in Mzuzu during a post-election evaluation meeting on the recent by-elections that MEC conducted in three wards in Karonga District on 26 March 2024.
He said the ID issuance exercise is key as it would enable more people to register in the voters’ roll during next year’s general elections.
Making his contribution during the meeting, Mackenzie Malema, who is chairperson for AFORD in Karonga District, said he is hopeful that the meeting will iron out even challenges that parties experienced during past local by-elections.
The meeting has attracted many participants, especially interested parties in the recently held Karonga by-elections.
