MBC, Women in Media mourn Phiso

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) has described the death of Chikondi Phikiso, a Chief Producer at MBC until her death, as a huge loss to the media industry.

Phikiso, who died on Wednesday 12 March, 2025 at Mzuzu Central Hospital, joined Malawi Broadcasting Corporation MBC in 1994.

MBC Regional Controller for the North, Peter Makawa, said Phikiso has been behind the production of a number of programmes on all MBC platforms including MBC Radio 1 and MBC TV and rose to the position of Chief Producer.

“It’s hard to explain the shock but we leave everything in the hands of God,” said Makawa.  “We have lost a hardworking person who could produce and present a number of programmes, including outside broadcasts.”

Phikiso was instrumental in the production and presentation of various programmes that include Pa Mlambe, Mapemphero and Za Mchipatala.

Towera Katswiri, Vice General Secretary of the Association for Women in Media, also expressed sadness over her passing.

“She has been a member for a number of years and her demise has left a wide gap in our organisation, also considering that she was more like an advisor to up and coming female broadcasters,” said Katswiri.

Phikiso was posted to Mzuzu Studios of MBC in 2024 as a Chief Producer. She was born on 11 August 1973 and her remains will be laid to rest on 14 March 2025 at Area 18 Cemetery in Lilongwe.
