Malawi has pledged its commitment to Mission 300, an initiative by the World Bank and African Development Bank aimed at connecting 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.
President Dr Lazarus Chakwera made the commitment on Tuesday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the Mission 300 African Heads of State Energy Summit.
Speaking at the summit, Dr Chakwera said that, as part of its commitment, Malawi aims to increase electricity access from the current 25 percent to 70 percent by 2030.
The President emphasised that the goal of connecting 300 million people by 2030 can only be realised if countries prioritise regional integration, create an enabling environment for the private sector, and ensure that power utilities are financially sustainable.
Over 12 African heads of state have convened in Dar es Salaam for the summit.
