The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has stressed that it will not relent in the fight against mobile fraud to protect ICT users.
The Director of Legal Affairs at MACRA, Thokozani Chimbe, says the organisation is acquiring the Central Identity Register (CIR) to improve the tracking capabilities of mobile devices.
She was speaking in Lilongwe during a stakeholder meeting which MACRA organised as part of the World Consumer Rights Day.
Chimbe says the new system will also assist in tracking and blacklisting devices that have been linked to criminal activity.
In response to the mobile fraud concerns, Director of Customer Experience at Airtel Malawi, Sibusiso Nyasulu, says that the company is implementing a number of measures to safeguard clients from scammers.
These include strengthened sim swap services to ensure customers’ information cannot be accessed by scammers.
World Consumer Rights Day is commemorated on 15 March every year.
The theme for this year was “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.”
MACRA however chose a sub theme “Fair and Reasonable Disclosure of Terms and Conditions to ICT users.”
