Karonga set for copper, gold exploration

SXDKS Mining Limited says it is set to embark on an exploration of copper and gold in Karonga, a project the consultants say could help boost Malawi’s foreign exchange earnings once mining begins.

The exploration, which will target identified sites in Senior Chief Mwakaboko, covering 21.5741 square kilometres, aims to identify locations for future detailed economic feasibility studies for potential mineral development.

In an interview after engaging members of the District Environmental Sub-Committee (DESC), TDJ Investment Senior Consultant for the project, Leonard Chakanga, said the consultancy aims to ensure that all exploration activities comply with environmental and social safeguards.

“Our goal is to carry out responsible exploration that balances economic potential with environmental and social considerations,” he said.

Chakanga further noted that successful mining operations could help address the country’s persistent foreign exchange shortages due to the demand of copper and gold.

Karonga Civil Society Organization Network Chairperson Edgar Phiri, welcomed the project, saying the exploration and eventual mining activities will bring development and improved livelihoods to the area.
