K14 BN Norwegian boost for Malawi’s food security

Norwegian government has given the World Food Programme (WFP) $8.3 million (over K14 billion) to support the national 2025/26 emergency lean season response and home-grown school feeding programme in Malawi.

Norwegian Ambassador to Malawi, Anne Sofie Bjelland, announced this in Lilongwe during a tour of the WPF warehouse in Kanengo.

$4.5 million is for the lean season response, and $3.8 million will support the home-grown school feeding programme.

Bjelland said their goal is to save lives, ease suffering and maintain people’s dignity and rights.

She added that their humanitarian assistance is not merely a response to immediate needs, but an integral part of Norway’s broader vision for a more secure, inclusive, gender-equal, and sustainable world.

WFP Country Director, Hyoung-Joon Lim, said the contribution will enable them to reach more food-insecure households and enhance the nutritional status of school-going children in various primary schools.

Commissioner for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), Wilson Moleni, hailed Norway for continued support through programmes focusing on health, food security, education, and good governance.

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report released this year shows that over four million people will require food assistance during the October 2025 to March 2026 lean season.
