The Government of Malawi has launched the Power of Data Initiative, which is set to revolutionise data collection, analysis, and utilisation across the nation. The launch, held in Lilongwe, drew prominent figures who underscored the significance of robust data systems for national progress.
Opening the ceremony, the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Simplex Chithyola Banda, emphasised the indispensable role of data in informed policymaking.
“Without data, planning becomes guesswork,” he said, elaborating on the initiative’s focus areas and emphasising that timely, accurate, and accessible data underpin sound fiscal policy and effective resource allocation.
“Reliable data forms the backbone of any credible financial strategy,” he noted.
The Minister outlined the initiative’s three core pillars: strengthening data infrastructure, fostering data literacy, and enhancing transparency.
“This marks a pivotal step towards building a resilient, prosperous, and equitable Malawi,” Banda affirmed.
In her remarks, the Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba, echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of data in both macroeconomic and local-level decision-making.
“We are currently on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. However, we need accurate data to accelerate action,” said Zamba, pointing out the key role of the National Statistical Office (NSO).
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malawi, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, reiterated the UN’s commitment to supporting the initiative.
“The Power of Data Initiative embodies our collaborative approach to position data as a cornerstone for sustainable development,” she remarked. Adda-Dontoh lauded the programme for its alignment with global development objectives and its potential to improve resource distribution.
In his presentation, the Commissioner of Statistics at the NSO, Shelton Kanyanda, emphasised the value of partnerships in strengthening the nation’s statistical framework.
“No single institution can meet today’s data demands alone,” said Kanyanda, advocating for joint efforts among government bodies, private sector players, and international partners to build a resilient and credible data ecosystem.
The Power of Data Initiative promises to elevate decision-making and drive socio-economic progress, laying the groundwork for a brighter future for Malawi.
