Man jailed 18 years for robbery

Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Balaka has sentenced Andrew Wyson, 38, to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbery.

Wyson, who was accompanied by Wichard Kalanka and Greshans Bwanali, committed the crime on April 21, 2024 at Mponda Village in Balaka District.

They robbed Lawrence Chimkondenji (a businessman) money amounting to K5,500,000 and Airtel Airtime worthy K1,200,000, all to the value of K6,700,000 and vandalised his house.

In court, Wyson pleaded guilty but asked for leniency because he is a first offender and has family obligations, but the state argued for a stiffer penalty citing well execution of the crime and Senior Resident Magistrate Joshua Nkhono concurred.

However, the other two co-accused Richard Kalanka and Greshans Bwanali were acquited due to insufficient evidence.

Andrew Wyson, comes from Kanje Village in Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu.
