Farmers from Uzumara in Senior Chief Mwankhunikira in Rumphi believe they start making more profits from their farm produce because of the newly opened 8-kilometre earth road at Uzumara will reduce transport costs.
One of the farmers, Petros Mwalweni, who also runs a grocery shop at Uzumara says transport costs will be reduced and people will be able to take their produce to Phwezi Market before it perishes.
A Tomato farmer, Dorothy Mzumara, from the same area, says she used to pay up to K4000 to transport one 20-litre bucket of tomatoes to Phwezi and hopes transport costs will fall and she will make more profits.
Member of Parliament for the area, Chidumba Mkandawire, says he is happy the people of Uzumara have been connected to Phwezi and promised to work on upgrading it further.
Roads Authority funded the construction of 5 bridges between Phwezi and Uzumara which cost K70 million while chiefs in the area mobilised their people to grade the road as a community contribution to the project.
