Devolution of fisheries sector to enhance data flow and utilisation

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change believes the devolution of the fisheries sector will enhance data flow and its utilisation at the district level.

Senior Deputy Director of Fisheries, responsible for training and community outreach, Jacqueline Kazembe, addressed the District Executive Committee (DEC) on Tuesday at the Nkhata Bay District Council Chamber.

The briefing focused on the devolution of functions within the fisheries sector.

“District councils can immediately act on data on trends of catches without consulting the central level,” Kazembe said.

She also advised councils to familiarise themselves with the guidelines and standards provided and allocate enough human resources to the sector.

The meeting was conducted with funding from a USAID-supported project called Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Lake Malawi (REFRESH).
