President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has challenged chiefs to reclaim their role of providing leadership in natural resource management and conservation.
Dr Chakwera was speaking at the Botanic Garden in Lilongwe at the close of the two-day Chiefs Forum on Natural Resource Management.
The meeting has drawn Paramount Chiefs, Senior Chiefs and Traditional Authorities from across the country.
He said it was encouraging that during their meeting on Wednesday, Chiefs resolved to restore forest reserves and wildlife besides facilitating behavioural change towards environmental conservation.
“Government alone can’t manage to tackle or deal with the lawlessness in plunder of natural assets, chiefs should take a leading role,” said President Chakwera.
Earlier, Minister of Natural Resources, Michael Usi, disclosed plans to start awarding all chiefs in ecosystem restoration as one way of motivating them and their subjects.
