Africa Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has secured 10,000 mpox vaccines from the World Health Organization which will be distributed to African countries.
Africa CDC Secretary General Dr Jean Kaseya said the vaccines will help many countries currently struggling to effectively contain the new strain of mpox, which has recently caused global alarm.
Mpox is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as beddings. It has caused 517 deaths and there are 17,541 recorded cases in 13 African countries in 2024.
