The Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme (MLW) has urged journalists to always protect children and vulnerable people when reporting stories.

MLW’s Safeguarding Officer, Elizabeth Mkutumula, made the remarks on Tuesday during a safeguarding training session for journalists in Blantyre.

Mkutumula said with the significant influence that the media has, journalists need to exercise caution when portraying a particular section of society.

“Journalists have a huge responsibility in defending the rights of vulnerable groups…Their words can either make a positive difference or perpetuate harm on vulnerable people,” she said.

Jeffrey Chinawa, a participant during the training and a journalist for the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), said the session was eye-opening.

“I now have a better understanding of the issues concerning vulnerable groups. The knowledge gained here will not only benefit my work but also contribute to my broader understanding of life, ” said Chinawa.

“Safeguarding issues are important because they mainly involve the rights of vulnerable people, who need our protection,” he added.
