Govt. promotes aquaculture to drive Malawi 2063 goals

Government says it is committed to promoting the country’s fishing industry as a way of achieving economic growth at both the household and national levels.

Minister of Natural Resources, Patricia Wiskes, said this during a visit to fish farmers of Mdimwa Fish Club under Senior Chief Mwalweni in Rumphi District.

She said the government recognises fish farming as key to improving food and income security among farmers and players across the fish value chain.

Wiskes added that, apart from creating employment opportunities, surplus production can be supplied to both local and international markets, aligning with the aspirations of Malawi 2063.

Integrated Agriculture Aquaculture Specialist at the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada, Tiwonge Soko, said the organisation is working with the government to empower fish farmers.

Soko said this will be done by providing fingerlings and promoting integrated farming through the provision of goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits.

One of the farmers, Layman Msiska, urged the youth to embrace innovation and move away from overreliance on white-collar jobs.

Annually, Mdimwa Fish Club generates approximately K27 million from fish harvests.
